A century ago, growing old was a perilous
prospect. People who were too old to work,
too weak to live independently, or widowed
after a lifetime of partnership often faced dire
circumstances. Many seniors relied on a patchwork
network of charities and the goodwill of family
and friends to survive. In response, Luella Hannan
and John Scudder each sought to provide
Detroit seniors with care and dignity. The Hannan
Memorial Foundation and the John Scudder Trust
for Old People demonstrated that the value of life
does not end at productivity.
100 Years Unbound, The Power of Aging
shares a century of innovation and ingenuity that
transformed senior living. The Hannan Center’s
story showcases what’s possible when the ignored
and forgotten are respected and empowered.
