Volunteers are essential in supporting all of Hannan Center’s diverse programming. Whether you are making reassurance calls to older adults, helping keep our facilities clean and safe, supporting classes and events, or keeping our resource room stocked, you are improving the quality of life for older adults and our community as a whole.
Volunteer Opportunities
Telephone Reassurance: Fight social isolation by building connections and community with older adults through weekly phone calls
Tech Fridays: Support older adults in navigating technology by providing one-on-one support
Kayrod Gallery: Celebrate older adult artists as a docent or greeter during opening receptions and daily gallery and gift shop hours
BeyondU: Connect with participants and instructors as they learn and explore by supporting and facilitating in-person and virtual classrooms
Fallena Resource Room: Maintain and manage a changing inventory of supplemental household and personal items
DAYBREAK: Assist staff in our day program for adults living with dementia and their caregivers
Social Work: Lend a hand to our dedicated social workers and service members as they connect older adults to resources and support.
Who Can Volunteer?
We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds, with flexible assignments that can be tailored to your schedule, abilities, skills, and interests.
Individuals: Any person looking to connect with and support older adults in Detroit and SE Michigan
Groups: Social, professional, and student groups are always welcome, with half or full day project-based opportunities available

Celebrating its centennial in 2025, Hannan Center’s older adult programming includes the Zena Baum Senior Service Center – My Neighborhood Connections, Occupational Therapy, and Active Connections; Daybreak – a caregiver daytime program providing care to individuals experiencing dementia; Beyond U – affordable professional instruction for older adults, Arts & Culture based workshops and courses; and lastly a showplace for the creative aging practice of our participants – the Ellen Kayrod Gallery.
