SUMMARY:B(L)ACK Music Series - Thelonious Monk (BeyondU)
DESCRIPTION: King Sophia \nFor this episode\, we will be covering the less known aspects of the life and music of jazz giant\, Thelonious Monk. The 2nd most recorded jazz composer in history\, Monk’s cutting edge writing and improvisational styles are heralded major pioneering steps in the progress of Black music and he composed a great amount of what are now considered ‘jazz standards’. Many may know of Monk’s music and influence\, but not of his complicated history and the intense persecution and erasure he experienced throughout his life and the many ways his story was rewritten and his character misrepresented to suit bigoted stereotypes. We will discuss all of these elements thoroughly interspersed by performances of some of his most influential compositions. Before the lecture and performance\, there will be a showing of the documentary\, Thelonious Monk: Straight\, No Chaser. Alongside rare footage of interviews and performances by Monk and his band\, the film contains the only known footage of Monk off of the stage. For its cultural and historical significance\, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

SUMMARY:B(L)ACK Music Series - Bill Lee (BeyondU Concert)
DESCRIPTION:King Sophia\nThis episode will center Spike Lee’s father\, Bill Lee\, and the film\, She’s Gotta Have It\, for which he composed the classic soundtrack. The lecture will include a comprehensive account of his complex story and musical evolution\, and how he influenced and set the stage for his son. In particular\, this conversation will highlight Lee’s prominence as an bassist\, band leader\, composer\, arranger\, and producer\, as the wide reach of his sound included many recordings and projects that\, due to being popularized by a different lead artist\, were not properly associated with Lee in the public eye. Featured on over 250 records and in several of his son’s movies\, his influence is clear. Throughout the evening\, The King’s Trio will perform a thoughtfully curated selection of these songs as we explore how they laid the foundation for arrangers and producers thereafter.

SUMMARY:Beyond U - Listening B(L)ack Media Series
DESCRIPTION:December 5 | Time: 5-7 PM | Location: Hannan Center Black Box Theater Cost: $15 Isaac Hayes – Lecture & Film: “Shaft”\nThis episode will center on soul music’s first superhero\, Isaac Hayes\, and the cult classic film\, Shaft\, for which he composed the iconic soundtrack. The lecture will include a comprehensive account of his life’s story and musical evolution. In particular\, this conversation will highlight Hayes’s prominence as an arranger\, songwriter\, and producer\, as the wide reach of his sound included many recordings and projects that\, due to being popularized by a different lead musician\, were not properly associated with Hayes in the public eye. Included in these under discussed works of his are the many tunes he wrote for other artists and the more than 1000 times his music was sampled by others.\nThroughout the evening\, The King’s Trio will perform a lovingly curated selection of these songs as we explore how they laid the foundation for arrangers and producers thereafter.\nIn addition to discussing the musical elements of Shaft’s cultural importance\, we will also discuss the socioeconomic commentary found in this classic blaxploitation action film. As the prototype for Black superheroes everywhere\, we can’t deny that Shaft was a bad motha…\n \nJanuary 9 | Time: 5-7 PM | Location: Hannan Center Black Box Theater Cost: $15 David Baker – Music & Lecture: For Gold & Glory\nThe third musical focus in this series will be trombonist\, cellist\, composer\, and teacher\, David Baker. As an early leader of jazz education and a highly decorated composer\, Baker left a lasting impact on the worlds of music performance\, writing\, and pedagogy alike. However\, despite having over 65 recordings\, 70 books\, and 400 articles to his credit\, this brilliant composer has often been sadly overlooked in and outside of leading music institutions. Thus\, we will pay special attention to both his compositional versatility and his influence on collegiate jazz education throughout this sonic storytelling event. In addition to sharing the stories and music of this important pedagogue\, our event will include a showing and discussion of the movie\, For Gold & Glory\, for which Baker composed the Emmy Award-winning score. This heartrending film tells the tale of legendary Black racer and inventor\, Charlie Wiggins\, who paved the way for the integration of not only auto racing\, but the sports industry as a whole. Known colloquially as the “Negro Speed King\, ” Wiggins’s brilliance as a mechanic and driver would not allow the horrors of racism to stop him from having a phenomenal impact on the world around him. So\, throughout the evening of music and history sharing\, we will be celebrating both of these unsung heroes.\n\n\n\n\nBeyond U Hannan After Dark - Listening B(l)ack Media Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Name\n *\n \n \n	\n Name	\n\n	\n \n \n First \n\n First \n \n \n Last \n\n Last \n \n\n\n \n \n\n\n Address\n *\n \n \n \n \n\n\n City\n *\n \n \n \n \n\n\n State\n *\n \n \n AlabamaAlaskaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyoming	\n	\n \n \n\n\n Zip\n *\n \n \n \n \n\n\n Phone\n *\n \n \n \n \n\n\n Email\n *\n \n \n \n \n\n\n Birthday\n *\n \n \n \n \n\n\n Hannan After Dark\n \n \n Aug 1 | Listening B(l)ack: Billy Strayhorn - Music & Film 'Lush Life' - $15\n Sep 12 | Listening B(l)ack: Quincy Jones - Music & Film 'The Wiz' - $15\n Oct 3 | Listening B(l)ack: TBA - Music & Film\n Nov 7 | Listening B(l)ack: TBA - Music & Film\n Dec 5 | Listening B(l)ack: TBA - Music & Film\n\n \n \n\n\n Total\n \n \n \n \n\n\n	\n\nSubmit\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n If you are human\, leave this field blank.

SUMMARY:Hannan After Dark | Listening B(l)ack Media Series
DESCRIPTION:June 6 |Time: 5 – 7PM | Location: Hannan Center Black Box Theater – Lower-Level |Cost: $15 \nCurtis Mayfield – Music & Film “Sparkle”\nThe focal point of this event will be the powerful composer and musician Curtis Mayfield and the now-cult classic film\, Sparkle\, for which he composed the soundtrack. The lecture will of course include a comprehensive account of his life’s story and the wide-reaching impact he had on the musical scene and the world as a whole. In particular\, this conversation will highlight Mayfield’s prominence as a musical activist\, as many pieces from his vast array of robust works are considered to be incredibly important contributions to the ongoing fight for freedom. There will be live performances of some of these songs throughout the lecture. \nThe feature film for this episode is a rags-to-riches musical drama about the trials and tribulations faced by an all-Black girl group as they attempt to work their way to success. The movie became quite well-loved\, especially because of the way it portrays the effects of Harlem’s social and musical culture around the world. Mayfield’s soundtrack perfectly underscores both the gravitas and poetic nature of the film. \nJuly 11 | Time: 5-7PM | Location: Hannan Center Black Box Theater – Lower-Level | Cost: $15\nRoberta Flack — Music & Lecture “Compared to What”\nThis event will showcase the legacy of prodigious songstress\, Roberta Flack\, and her power and versatility as a political activist and revolutionary poet. \nThe lecture will begin with a journey through the sonic storyteller’s life and career.  We will discuss the historical and cultural importance of her compositions as we perform some of them throughout the lecture\, as well as the long-lasting impact of her political work as the 87-year-old icon continues pushing for a better society and a brighter day. \nAugust 1 | Time: 5-7PM | Location: Hannan Center Black Box Theater – Lower-Level | Cost: $15             Billy Strayhorn — Music & Film “Lush Life”\nFor this episode we will focus on the vast musical impact of tremendously prolific composer\, Billy “Sweet Pea” Strayhorn. We will examine his lifelong musical journey as an indispensable artistic counterweight to Duke Ellington.  To supplement the discussion\, there will be a showing of the documentary\, Billy Strayhorn: Lush Life\, which sheds necessary light on the complicated obstacles Strayhorn was forced to navigate as an openly gay Black man\, as well as a preeminent musical artist. Live performances of his works will illustrate the profound and long-lasting nature of Strayhorn’s immense musical catalog. \nSeptember 12 | Time: 5-7PM | Location: Hannan Center Black Box Theater – Lower – Level | Cost: $15 Quincy Jones — Lecture & Film “The Wiz”\nThe focus of this episode will be the incomparably influential Quincy Jones. We will discuss his plethora of original compositions and arrangements\, as well as the many significant artists and projects he shaped as a vetted musical architect and guide.   The lecture will be preceded by a showing of The Wiz\, laying the groundwork for our discussion of its soundtrack composer’s expansive artist portfolio.

SUMMARY:Hannan After Dark | Listening B(l)ack Media Series
DESCRIPTION:May 2 |Time: 5 – 7PM | Location: Hannan Center Black Box Theater – Lower Level Cost: $15 weeknight\nNat Adderley Work Song — Music & Film “A Man Called Adam”\nThe third episode in this series will be about the Adderley brothers\, Cannonball and Nat\, with the primary focus being on the latter. The two brothers had an extensive influence on jazz and every genre that followed. Cannonball is more widely-known today than his brother\, despite the fact that they each produced vast amounts of recordings and were deeply embedded within the scene of those jazz musicians that we now call “the greats.” Because of this disproportional imbalance\, we will pay special attention to the life and works of Nat Adderley. However\, the King’s Trio will perform works by both brothers. \nIn congruence with this biographical review\, this event will include a showing and discussion of the movie\, A Man Called Adam\, in which Nat Adderley played trumpet to overdub performances by Sammy Davis Jr.’s character. This heartrending film is a deep dive into the tragic duality demanded for Black survival — what W.E.B. Dubois called the “warring souls of Black folk.” Its story explores the near impossibility of attempting to find a balance between standing up for oneself (or acting out in defiance) and being careful enough to avoid the often dire consequences. \nJune 6 |Time: 5 – 7PM | Location: Hannan Center Black Box Theater – Lower Level Cost: $15 weeknight\nCurtis Mayfield – Music & Film “Sparkle”\nThe focal point of this event will be the powerful composer and musician Curtis Mayfield and the now-cult classic film\, Sparkle\, for which he composed the soundtrack.
