Lovingly nicknamed Betty Bebop by Lionel Hampton’s wife and mentored by Dizzy Gillespie\, Carter is beloved amongst jazz listeners for her unique vocal tone\, her melodic precision\, and her iconic scatting skills. However\, most may not know how accomplished she was in composition\, music business\, and music education; between starting one of the first artist-led independent record labels\, creating a Kennedy Center jazz education program that’s lasted over 25 years\, and being one of the last prominent band singers of the era\, her influence overall was massive — so much so that President Bill Clinton eventually awarded her the National Medal of the Arts. In this lecture\, we will highlight her many talents and pay special attention to the incredible songs she composed through storytelling and through performances by the King’s Trio. The movie component for this episode will be Carter’s award-winning documentary. Still\, Then\, She’s Betty Carter\, written and directed by Michelle Parkerson\, is a significant contribution to the 1980s renaissance of Black Queer artistry and activism. We will spend some time discussing Parkerson’s and the film’s cultural relevance and political significance\, as well as Carter’s own profound cultural footprint. The 2nd most recorded jazz composer in history\, Monk’s cutting edge writing and improvisational styles are heralded major pioneering steps in the progress of Black music and he composed a great amount of what are now considered ‘jazz standards’. Many may know of Monk’s music and influence\, but not of his complicated history and the intense persecution and erasure he experienced throughout his life and the many ways his story was rewritten and his character misrepresented to suit bigoted stereotypes. We will discuss all of these elements thoroughly interspersed by performances of some of his most influential compositions. Before the lecture and performance\, there will be a showing of the documentary\, Thelonious Monk: Straight\, No Chaser. Alongside rare footage of interviews and performances by Monk and his band\, the film contains the only known footage of Monk off of the stage. For its cultural and historical significance\, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. The lecture will include a comprehensive account of his complex story and musical evolution\, and how he influenced and set the stage for his son. In particular\, this conversation will highlight Lee’s prominence as an bassist\, band leader\, composer\, arranger\, and producer\, as the wide reach of his sound included many recordings and projects that\, due to being popularized by a different lead artist\, were not properly associated with Lee in the public eye. Featured on over 250 records and in several of his son’s movies\, his influence is clear. Throughout the evening\, The King’s Trio will perform a thoughtfully curated selection of these songs as we explore how they laid the foundation for arrangers and producers thereafter. The lecture will include a comprehensive account of his life’s story and musical evolution. In particular\, this conversation will highlight Hayes’s prominence as an arranger\, songwriter\, and producer\, as the wide reach of his sound included many recordings and projects that\, due to being popularized by a different lead musician\, were not properly associated with Hayes in the public eye. Included in these under discussed works of his are the many tunes he wrote for other artists and the more than 1000 times his music was sampled by others.\nThroughout the evening\, The King’s Trio will perform a lovingly curated selection of these songs as we explore how they laid the foundation for arrangers and producers thereafter.\nIn addition to discussing the musical elements of Shaft’s cultural importance\, we will also discuss the socioeconomic commentary found in this classic blaxploitation action film. As an early leader of jazz education and a highly decorated composer\, Baker left a lasting impact on the worlds of music performance\, writing\, and pedagogy alike. However\, despite having over 65 recordings\, 70 books\, and 400 articles to his credit\, this brilliant composer has often been sadly overlooked in and outside of leading music institutions. Thus\, we will pay special attention to both his compositional versatility and his influence on collegiate jazz education throughout this sonic storytelling event. In addition to sharing the stories and music of this important pedagogue\, our event will include a showing and discussion of the movie\, For Gold & Glory\, for which Baker composed the Emmy Award-winning score. This heartrending film tells the tale of legendary Black racer and inventor\, Charlie Wiggins\, who paved the way for the integration of not only auto racing\, but the sports industry as a whole. Known colloquially as the “Negro Speed King\, ” Wiggins’s brilliance as a mechanic and driver would not allow the horrors of racism to stop him from having a phenomenal impact on the world around him.
